Tell it to Sunstar: No law against bicycles on bridges

THE Mactan-Cebu Bridge Management Board decided to ban the bicycle from using the two bridges connecting the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu. This was one of the solutions the board had come up to lessen the suicides that happen in both bridges.

Land Transportation Office 7 Director Victor Emmanuel Caindec said that Republic Act 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, prohibits bicycles from using bridges.

After a cursory reading of the said law, no article or section, particularly in its penal provisions, provides that a bicycle or non-motorized vehicle is not allowed to use or to be operated on bridges.

We would like to ask the authorities concerned as to what law they are referring to in not allowing bicycles to use the two bridge.

Banning the bicycle from using these bridges is not the solution to the problem on suicides in these bridges.

In developed countries, they prefer bicycle running within the city compared to using motor vehicles. There will be less traffic congestion if majority of the people will use the bicycle as a means of transportation.

This will promote a healthy lifestyle and less pollution to the environment, let alone serve as a cheap alternative means of transportation.
