Defending champion USP-F nails first win in Cesafi volleyball

THE University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) Baby Panthers picked up where they left off as they opened the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball season on a winning note.

The secondary boys’ defending champion Baby Panthers clawed the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars, 25-22, 25-11, to tally their first win on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019, at the University of San Carlos (USC) gym.

USP-F was tested in the first set after USJ-R tied the game at 16-all. But the Baby Panthers proved to have a sharp end game as they scored eight points and limited their opponent to five to come away with a 25-22 score.

The Baby Panthers pushed the gas pedal further and crushed the Baby Jaguars, 25-11, in the second set to nail a straight-set win.

It was a double victory for the Baby Panthers as the secondary girls’ team showed off their fearsome form with a commanding win over the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu-Mandaue (UCLM), 25-8, 25-17, in a game that served as the tournament’s curtain-opener.

USP-F is also the defending champion in the secondary girls’ division.

In the other game, the UCLM defeated the guest team Sisters of Mary Schools (SMS-Boystown), 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, in the boys’ division.

USC beat the University of Cebu Main Campus, 25-16, 25-14, while The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles took down the Cebu Institute of Technology-University, 25-8, 25-17, in the girls’ division. (SunStar Cebu)
