4 GCTA-freed convicts yield in San Ramon prison

FOUR convicts released from the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm through the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) have recently surrendered to the prison authorities in Zamboanga City

Correction Superintendent Robert Veneracion of the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm disclosed they were convicted for rape and murder crimes and have already served for more than 20 in prison.

Veneracion said did not released the identities of the four, who have undergone processing through the surrenderee assistance desk and placed in one area separated from the other convicts in the penal farm.

Veneracion said the four will remain in the penal farm while their GCTA are being reviewed by the central office of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

Veneracion clarified it is the central office that reviews and issues the release order of the felons through the GCTA after they have submitted all the needed data.

He disclosed the four were among the 1,000 convicts who were released from San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm through GCTA since 2014.

The GCTA is granted to convicts who have undertaken good deeds while in detention.

These included studying, training, participation in religious and sports activities, and committed no violation of prison rules.

On September 4, President Rodrigo Duterte has given the convicts released through the GCTA to register and surrender to the BuCor.

The President said they will be treated as fugitives from justice if they fail to do so. (SunStar Philippines)
