Wanted suspect killed in shootout

A POLICE officer was injured while a wanted suspect was killed for fighting back against the police during an operation on Saturday in Barangay Mahayag, Bunawan, Davao City.

Based on the police report, the incident happened at around 8:30 a.m. on September 14 after the Bunawan Police Station received information that Basilio Monteroso Abrigoso, 46, male, and resident of Piatos, San Isidro, Davao City was sighted in Mahayag, Davao City during its fiesta celebration.

Abrigoso has a pending warrant of arrest for homicide.

After receiving the information, personnel of Bunawan Police Station, led by Police Major Noel B. Villahermosa, immediately established a roadblock at Liloan in Mayahag, identified as the wanted person’s route passage.

By 9:15 a.m. on the same day, the suspect, riding on his motorcycle together with a companion, approached the checkpoint. The suspect then tried to elude the arresting team waiting for him at the checkpoint, and fired his handgun several times directly towards the law enforcers. He hit Police Corporal Joel Villegas who sustained multiple gunshot wounds prompting the other police officers to retaliate.

Villegas was brought to Southern Philippine Medical Center (SPMC) while the other police officers, who were divided into two teams, conducted hot pursuit operations against the suspects.

One of the suspects, identified as Rogelio Monteroso Abrigoso Jr, 49, single, and resident of Purok 3, Maranding, San Isidro, Davao City, was apprehended

Basilio was then pursued by the other team of police until they reached an abandoned house at Purok 8, Lower Mahayag, Bunawan. Basilio started firing his handgun towards the pursuing elements but was killed during the firefight.
