SunStar Bacolod’s 11th anniversary

MESSAGE from the President

There are a lot of reasons to celebrate the 11th anniversary of SunStar Bacolod as a community paper in Negros with much enthusiasm. We have gone a long way from the time we started way back in 2008. We are proud to say that SunStar Bacolod has been a valuable contributor in nation building as we continuously toil to help inform and empower local community.

On our 11th year and in this digital age, we are happy to share with you our journey as we expand our reach into the digital world.

Just recently we have launched two daily digital news segments; SSB News Minute and SSB News Nightly that regularly air in our social media account. We are also airing a weekly digital product dubbed “SSB News Weekend” that recaps the highlights of the week in Negros. We are the first newspaper-led digital news producer in Western Visayas as we intensify our digital presence for you.

However, our print paper is facing its own challenges brought about by the digital age and social media. Newspapers such as SunStar Bacolod have been hit hard by the decline of demand for print media. A lot of local and even national papers have closed or merged in last five years.

Yet as we migrate into digital platforms in providing you the latest news and information, we will recommit ourselves to continue to provide you with our usual print product.

It is an investment for our part but there is always that feeling of legitimacy that comes from print. It remains a necessity of modern life as it remains very powerful medium in the expression of news and views, especially in this age of fake news.

Print also secures the spirit of democracy as it enforces transparency and accountability upon the government and other community stakeholders. It remains an effective tool to educate readers. Print is credible.

The popularity of our print media may have been overrun by the digital era but its effectiveness still persists.

We do this because we take it to heart our role as independent monitor of power keeping our public officials in check.

As always we shall remain fair and unbiased in our news reporting while we also provide spaces for local views who would like to help shape public opinion.

And in our 11th year here in Negros, we are as strong as ever in our commitment both in print and digital platforms to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, that our loyalty is to the people, that we will always adhere to verifying things before they get published, and that we will continue to work as independent monitor of power.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the men and women behind SunStar Bacolod affiliate, both past and present, for shaping our company to what it is today – Negros Occidental’s premier local newspaper.

Happy 11th Anniversary SunStar Bacolod!
