Missing couple from Oslob found in Bohol waters

THE treacherous waves and ugly weather failed to separate Samuel Caldino from his wife Olympia.

The couple from Barangay Lagunde in Oslob town, Cebu went missing after they sailed to catch fish at dawn Friday, Sept. 13, 2019.

After more than 50 hours at sea, the Caldinos were found inside their wooden boat in the waters between Panglao Island and Oslob past 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. Their boat had been damaged by waves.

The Caldinos were found weak due to fatigue and hunger, said P/SSgt. Joel Echaves of a police station in Alburquerque town, Bohol.

Relief registered in the faces of the couple’s children after hearing the news of their parents’ survival, according to Lagunde Barangay Councilor Elsa Gifwold.

Gifwold said she and the couple’s two children will fetch the couple in Tagbilaran City at dawn on Tuesday Sept. 17.

Samuel, 52, and Olympia, 45, decided to catch fish last Friday even if the weather was bad as they have no other means of livelihood. Under normal weather conditions, they often set sail at dawn, and they would return to shore around 8 a.m.

When they failed to return home last Friday, two of their five children began to worry. But the news of their parents surviving a sea ordeal brought them joy. FROM BBT OF SUPERBALITA CEBU / KAL
