Super Ka: Alden Richards Unsay nagliming tanghaga sa The Gift?

Alden Richards, Ssssuper Ka!

What made you decide to accept the role?

Well, it has been a year since my last teleserye, Victor Magtanggol. Parang I really asked GMA to give me a story na kung puwede ibalik yung mga ginagawa ko before such as heavy drama. So, they came up with this concept. Actually, there have been a lot of concepts presented pero dito ako nagka-interest. I like portraying roles na masa. Yung hiindi mayaman, yung nakatsinelas, nakasando, naka-shorts lang na kumakayod para sa pamilya. But it’s the concept made me feel like I have to do this, especially sa mga Kapuso natin na disable, especially yung bulag nating Kapuso. I wanted this project would be a beacon of hope for them. Yun kasi yung naging realization ko and naging experience ko upon immersing sa culture nila. Despite their disability hindi natapos doon yung living a life of purpose. That’s why I said yes to it. I want this message to be amplified through this teleserye.

How was the experience sa blind immersion training mo?

Nalungkot ako. I felt na ang laking kawalan ng vision. Yung nakakakita ka before tapos bigla siyang kukunin sa `yo because of accident or sickness or whatever. Ang lungkot ng idea kasi before you used to see a lot of things: colors; people; and faces of your loved ones then eventually makakalimutan mo sila lahat. Like these people that I interviewed, 27 years nang nabulag coming from a sighted life. Meron ding 10 years. That’s why nanggigil ako lalo na talagang let’s do this project for those people na wala talagang masyadong kaalaman. Ako before this role, wala akong ganoong kalalim na kaalaman sa buhay ng mga bulag nating kababayan. So with that experience parang sabi ko na yung story nila dapat maipaalam natin sa mga nanonood for these people to see na sa dilim ng buhay, sa dilim ng pagsubok ay merong pag-asa.

When was this project conceptualized?

I think it was a little over a year ago. Dumaan muna talaga sa GMA Creatives. Sila muna ang nag-finalize sa story and what will be all about. But it’s also really a way of highlighting Manila now after it has gotten a makeover with so much improvement now. We were happy to shoot in Divisoria with a lot of cooperative people, of course, with the help of Mayor Isko Moreno. The Gift kasi is a showcase of a lot of aspects in the world of Divisoria and Manila now. Ang dami naming kinukuwentong estorya with this teleserye pati na yung sa lugar kung saan kami nagso-shoot.

After the box-office success of your movie, how conscious are you now in choosing your project?

I’m not saying I’m being choosy now but I’m choosing projects with purpose and with meaning. Siyempre, as we grow older, as we experienced things in life, we learned something from it. Siyempre mas kukunin natin yung good ones than bad ones when we make a decision. As long as it’s inspirational, relevant and with good purpose.

Rating wise, how pressured are you?

Let’s be practical and frank about it. The show is only as good as the numbers. Ever since I’ve been doing teleserye for 9 years now... Of course, it matters to a lot of people especially to our bosses, the number matters. But for actors and for the people in the creative process, it’s really the message of the story that we want to send. It’s not the number that we’re getting but how beautifully and masterfully a project or a show is crafted through blood, sweat and tears. Yes, we’re pressured sa numbers, we have to admit kasi yun yung totoo. We cannot sugarcoat that. But we believe in this material. I think that’s what really matters if you believe in something, you do it. And that’s why we’re doing The Gift because we believe in the message.
