Iloilo, Cebu to join 2nd Aguirre Open chess tour

NOW, it’s no longer an all-Negrense showdown when the 2nd Antonio Ivan S. Aguirre Negros Open Individual Chess Championship starts on April 4, 2010 at the lobby of Top's Millennium Plaza Bowling Lanes at 10th Hilado Sts., Capitol Shopping Center, Bacolod City.

This is after tournament director and chief arbiter Dodz Felisilda on Friday disclosed that several teams from Iloilo and Cebu called up to take part in this undertaking.

He further said during the last edition of this event, Cebu also sent their entries.

“This will be a great start of a bigger tournament in the future where we intend to have it as the Visayas Open,” he said.

The seven-round Swiss system (1-hour 20 moves + 1 hour-to-finish-the-game) competition that will run its elimination round until April 25 will draw Grand Masters, International Masters, Fide Masters, and National Masters from every part of the country.

Meanwhile, registration is going on with P200 per participant and deadline is on Friday, April 2, 2010, 6:00 p.m., at the tournament venue.

Prizes for the top finishers are P5,000 plus 42-inch, four-legged "King" trophy for the champion; for the first runner-up P4,000 plus 36-inch, four-legged "Queen" trophy; for the second runner-up P3,000 plus 30-inch, four-legged "Rook" trophy; for the third runner-up P2,000 plus 27-inch, four-legged "Bishop" trophy; and for the fourth runner-up P1,000 plus 24-inch, four-legged "Knight" trophy.

The sixth to 20th placed finishers will each receive chess set with mat and bag.

Meanwhile, the top scorers in the female category will get P700 for first place plus gold chess medal; P500 for second place plus silver chess medal; and P300 for third place plus bronze chess medal.

The top three scorers in the Kiddies (13 years old and below) category will also get P500 for first place plus gold chess medal; P300 for second place plus silver chess medal; and P200 for third placed plus bronze chess medal.

This chessfest is bankrolled by US-based Negrense chess patron and book author Antonio Ivan S. Aguirre, CPA, CFE, CSI, MBA; Engineer Hugo Villanueva, P.E.; Jeremy Kirk Chavez, Kemal Karaseki, Allan Pamplona, Demsthenes Glenn Avria, Don Niño Santos and Charo Sayno.

The event, meanwhile, is organized and officiated by the Game Royale Aficionados of Negros, Inc. headed by Dr. Alfonso Teorima in partnership with Top's Millennium Plaza Bowling Lanes, Inc.
