PCCI calls for new road system in Aklan, Capiz

KALIBO, Aklan -- The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) in Aklan and Capiz are pushing for a new road system that would further connect the two provinces.

Ramel Buncalan, president of the PCCI-Kalibo, said the road network will start from the coastal road of Ivisan, Capiz, connecting Sapian, Capiz to Batan, Aklan.

From Batan, a bridge is proposed to connect to New Washington, Aklan and to the capital town of Kalibo.

"The idea was proposed by PCCI Roxas City president Dale Bernas. I am also supporting it. We are also seeking support from the Provincial Small and Medium Enterprises Development Councils, and Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants, among others," Buncalan said.

He said as soon as the proposal letter is signed, it will be submitted to the Regional Development Council and to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

"If the new road system will be realized, this will make the Kalibo International Airport more accessible to Capiz residents and from that of Fifth District of Iloilo," Buncalan said.

"The road system is seen to ease transportation between the provinces and would increase economic productivity and development. It would also decongest traffic to the current existing road in the highway," he added.

Last year, the local governments of New Washington and Batan had endorsed a resolution asking the DPWH to build a bridge between their two ports.

At present, a five-minute boat ride serves as a major transport for both residents and traders wanting to visit both towns.
