43T traffic violators apprehended in 2009

THE Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) apprehended 43,770 traffic violators last year, even as it collected P3,153,799 million in administrative fines and fees.

A total of 4,930 traffic accidents were also recorded in 2009, which resulted to the death of 35 victims and causing injuries to 1,191 persons.

Estimated cost of damage to properties was placed at P23,396,500 million, said RTA executive overseer Antonio C. Montalba in his annual accomplishment report to City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula.

Of the total number of apprehensions, Montalba said that 8,774 traffic offenders have paid their fines, while 562 cases were filed in court and 32,577 cases are for case filing.

Fines in apprehensions topped last year’s collection with P1,889,079 million; followed by payments on traffic warrants, P654,396; impounded vehicles, P370,880; traffic clearance, P98,680 and confiscated items, P32,900.

As the city’s main implementing agency on traffic laws and orders, the RTA extended its assistance in the closure of 38 erring business establishments and conducted operations on “no plate, no travel policy,” 104; implementation of illegal parking, 219; drag race drive, 15 and apprehension of motorela units passing national highway, 105.

In line with its continuing efforts to raise the level of public awareness and consciousness on traffic polices, rules and regulations, the RTA conducted numerous traffic safety seminars and trainings attended by 3,094 participants during the period. (Sun.Star/CIO)
