Limlingan: In defense of SPS

IN A forum last week at the Don Honorio Ventura State University in Bacolor, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (Nica) Central Luzon Director Rolando Asuncion tagged Central Luzon Television 36 (CLTV 36) President and General Manager Sonia P. Soto as among the 31 broadcasters in the country linked to communists and terrorists groups.

During the said activity, Asuncion quipped: "Sa CLTV36, kilala niyo ba yun? Si Sonia Soto, 'yong maganda? Iyon," while referring to communists who had infiltrated the government and the media.

When reached for comments, Asuncion ignominiously said that he was stating a fact and denied red-tagging Soto, as if conclusively stating that Soto is indeed one of those who had infiltrated the government and the media.

For the information of the public, Soto was a student leader during her college days, while she was THEN (emphasis mine) a member of the League of Filipino Students (LFS).

Being a student leader does not necessarily mean one is already a member of the communist or terrorist groups. Asuncion went further that Soto is also a member of the Bagong Alyang Makabayan (Bayan) the predecessor of the group Bayan Muna. Soto, for the record, is not a mere member, but a leader of the LFS, Bayan and Gabriela. But that was THEN and this is now, again putting emphasis on the timeline.

As her background, Soto is a granddaughter of kapampangan poet Juan Crisostomo Soto. The older Soto was one among those who fought the Spaniards during the 1898 revolution. He is a philanthropist and a hero, revered for his poetry and other works.

On the other hand, SPS as she is fondly called (her name initials), is the former City Administrator of the City of San Fernando who was even appointed Fellow of the Institute for Solidarity in Asia because of the city's performance rated in the Performance Governance System (PGS) prior to leaving the government sector and went into media practice.

Soto is a four-time Golden Globe awardee. The said awards are very prestigious in the media industry. She would not be conferred of such awards if not for her works in the journalism world. She brought additional fame to Central Luzon in her own field.

As the president and general manager of CLTV 36, she was given the trust and utmost confidence of the late Levy P. Laus of the Laus Group of Companies (LGC). Said trust and confidence now continued by the present management of the LGC. The LGC is a corporation. Never a capitalist would hire a communist if indeed Soto is one.

Meanwhile, Asuncion is a former general. As such, he should have utilized efficiently his office' intelligence fund is gathering information against communists and terrorists. He should have refrained from using false, baseless, unfounded and unverified information in putting the lives of other people in jeopardy. He cannot be popular at the expense of other people.

The government should not tag and brand those people who simply wear red shirts and clench their fists as members of communists or terrorists groups. Government people should be extra careful in pinpointing those they want to pinpoint at their own caprice.

Asuncion however, had some accurate information he gathered and tagged to Soto. That is, she is maganda. She is indeed and I would always vouch on that because the tag that she is beautiful is a confirmed hard fact and not needing verification.

Seriously, I would vouch for SPS' credibility, integrity and professionalism. Many would do so too.
