THE 40th MassKara Festival themed “Bacolod City of Smiles” will open on October 7 at the Bacolod Public Plaza.

This was confirmed by Mayor Evelio Leonardia Tuesday, September 24, after he talked with the Silver MassKara Festival Organization Inc., (SMFOI) director Eli Francis Tajalangit to start the festival activity on October 7 instead of October 8.

Leonardia said on October 8, he will be attending an event at the Korean Embassy.

He said this year’s festival will be celebrated from October 7 to 27.

“The MassKara is now a full-grown international and global material and we’re looking forward to a MassKara like no other,” he added.

The SMFOI earlier released an initial schedule of the festival activities that will start on October 8.

Tajanlangit said the opening of the festival will be on October 7 while the schedule of activities will start on October 8.

“There’s no change (on the opening schedule) because we haven’t really announced the details of that (opening),” he said.

On September 7, the SMFOI launched the Ruby MassKara logo and the countdown to the 40th MassKara Festival.

The festival sites are the Bacolod Government Center, Bacolod Public Plaza, and the Lacson Tourism Strip.

Tajanlangit said they are also in the planning stage to put up a street-food village in the city.

The city government already asked the Philippine National Police to implement a total gun ban during the highlights of the festival.

City officials will also invite President Rodrigo Duterte to grace this year’s festival. At least three ambassadors already confirmed their attendance and two company presidents from their international sponsors are also coming.

The Ruby MassKara logo was created by artist Mark Lester Jarmin who incorporated elements from the first festival logo designed by Ely Santiago.

Jarmin earlier said the logo features Yuhom, the MassKara icon introduced three years ago, dressed up as a MassKara dancer, wearing a mask with 40 colorful feathers symbolizing the 40 years of the festival and a crown with a ruby gem and eight diamond studs for the eight decades of Bacolod.

“Yuhom” is a Hiligaynon word for smile.

He said “Yuhom” is also jumping as an expression of excitement for the 40th celebration of the MassKara Festival.
