PUJ strike set September 30; safety measures readied

THE Iloilo City Government has prepared safety measures to assist stranded passengers during the jeepney strike on Monday, September 30.

Mayor Jerry Treñas already declared suspension of classes in both public and private schools in all levels in the city on Monday in anticipation of the transport paralysis.

"It will paralyze and cause inconvenience on part of commuters especially students, school faculty and staff including parents and guardians. The suspension of classes seeks to minimize inconvenience to riding public," Treñas said.

He also encouraged employees with cars to share a ride with colleagues.

An inter-agency meeting will be conducted Friday, September 27, to put in place preparedness plans.

Public Safety and Transportation Management Office head Jeck Conlu said City Hall has 18 vehicles for deployment in plazas to ferry stranded passengers to their destination in the metropolis.

Conlu said they will be requesting augmentation of vehicles from Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Army, Philippine Coast and Provincial Government.

City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head Donna Magno will lead Operations Center set-up to be ready by 6 a.m. at Penthouse of City Hall to monitor and assist those affected.

Conlu said they will also ask the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to allow buses to enter the city beyond their terminals. (PR)
