Shift to diversified farming, DA urges farmers

THE Department of Agriculture (DA)-Northern Mindanao is urging farmers to shift from monocropping to diversified farming as it would help in boosting productivity and improve profitability of marginalized farmers.

“Sa atong mga mag-uuma (To our farmers), don’t depend on one crop. Because maigo gani ka, dili naka kabangon (If you get affected, you won’t be able to recover),” Noemi Beth Macario, the assistant center chief of the Agricultural Training Institute of DA-Northern Mindanao, said.

“We’re campaigning for diversified farming. Naa ang ahensya sa departamento sa agriculture, naa ang ATI, duol lang sa amo (There is the DA as well as ATI which is near us), we’re willing to serve,” she added.

Macario also encourages rice farmers, who are affected by the low production of rice in the country, to grow crops which can be alternatives to rice, such as corn, banana, among others.

“Ang DA ga promote gyud mi og other mga lagutmon nga kan-on like mais, saging, og uban pa nga pwede in lieu of rice,” Macario said.

She added that the agency will support the farmers in need of their assistance, such as training or interventions.

“Let your voice be heard. Unsay inyong kinahanglan pa, naa pa ba mo’y training nga kinahanglan, naa pa ba mo’y intervention nga pwede namo ikatabang, pahibalo lang (What else do you need? Do you need more training? Do you need intervention? Let us know),” Macario said.

“In the few months, pahangtud mahuman ang 2019, daghan pa kaayo mi’g activities of rice, training on rice,” she added.

Macario said farmers in need of their assistance can contact them through their Facebook page, website or visit them in their office in El Salvador City.
