FOR trying to extort money from business firms, five personnel of the material recovery facility (MRF) in Lapu-Lapu City were fired from their jobs.

Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan dismissed the job order employees, saying they have no place in his administration as they are dishonest people. The MRF personnel reportedly asked for P1,500 from each of the three establishments that had violated the city ordinance which imposes the no-segregation, no-collection policy.

The establishments were issued citations for not following the ordinance, but the MRF personnel assured the firms’ officials that they could smooth things out in exchange for a fee.

After the reports he received had been verified, Chan decided to expel the MRF workers.

“I already told them that if you are a worker of the City Hall, you are also Ahong Chan... You are bringing the name of the mayor. You are bringing the name of the city. So, they must take care of their jobs,” Chan said in a mix of Cebuano and English.

Chan urged other business establishments not to believe any person bringing his name in an extortion attempt. He was told that there were persons who asked for free cell phone load credits and order food in his name.

Extortion victims, Chan said, should report to him so he could take a swift action. (From GCM of SuperBalita Cebu, KAL)
