27 ex-drug users to avail free computer courses

A BRIGHTER future is waiting for at least 27 graduates of the Cebu City Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (Cosap) as they have the chance to avail of free computer courses in a state university.

This is what the Cosap head Jonah John Rodriguez revealed during the graduation rites of the Cosap graduates on Friday, September 27, 2019.

The graduates are persons deprived of liberty (PDL) or inmates who were granted plea bargaining for illegal drug cases.

Rodriguez said that an official of Cota International, who is a dean of the Cebu Technological University (CTU), vowed to closely coordinate with its board of directors so the Cosap graduates can avail of a free computer course.

The Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) also provides a budget for the livelihood training programs and vocational school intended for the graduates, said Rodriguez.

“We are doing this program for them to have the chance to go back to the mainstream,” said Rodriguez.

The beneficiaries underwent a six month-long program under Cosap as outpatient drug rehabilitation. Part of the program are sessions under the We Care program of the Cebu City Government.

A regular drug test is also being conducted, adding that they cannot graduate if positive during the test.

The 27 graduates were previously arrested for illegal drug abuse and were able to avail the plea bargain agreement as certified by the court.

The graduates came from various barangays in Cebu City; there was also one from Lapu-Lapu City.

Along with the graduation of the 27 beneficiaries of Cosap, there were also 52 graduates under the Department of Health (DOH).(SunStar Cebu)
