Talisay teen fatally stabs schoolmate; bullying blamed

A JUNIOR high school student died Sunday, September 22, after being stabbed by a fellow student at Sitio Mambucog, Barangay Zone 16, Talisay City.

Police identified the fatality as Arnel Braza, 12 years old, a Grade 7 student of the Rafael B. Lacson Memorial High School in the said city.

Investigation carried out by Police Chief Master Sgt. Melinda Taganile of the Women and Children’s Protection Desk of the Talisay City Police Station, said at around 3 p.m., September 22, Braza was allegedly assaulted and stabbed by Joseph Durable, 18, who is also a student of the said school.

Durable immediately fled after stabbing Braza, while the victim was immediately rushed to the city’s health clinic and later transferred to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City for treatment.

However, Braza later passed away due to the wounds he sustained.

Durable, meanwhile, was arrested a few hours later after the incident, and recovered the knife measuring almost nine inches from tip to handle.

When interrogated by police, Durable claimed the reason for the stabbing was due to Braza’s “constant bullying” wherein he was always challenged to a fist fight.

The victim’s parents, meanwhile, denied the allegations stating they were not teaching their child to become a bully. The parents’ statements were also backed up by the victim’s friends who all claimed that Braza never bullied Durable, who is a Grade 11 student.

Durable is now facing murder charges and he is currently detained at the Talisay City Police Station.
