DURING our stay at the DusitD2 Davao, we had most of our meals at its all-day dining restaurant, Madayaw Cafe.

SunStar Davao digital content editor Ace June Rell Perez and I arrived at the hotel around 12:30 p.m. After bringing our things to our room, we went down to the restaurant for a late lunch.

For our lunch with former DusitD2 Davao marketing and communications officer Ico Sindiong, we ordered the Tom Kha Gai, Beef Steak Tagalog, Pork Lumpia, Green Curry Chicken, and Pad Thai.

We started with the Pork Lumpia, which was just okay. Nothing special about it.

Then we were served the Tom Kha Gai or Thai Chicken Coconut Soup, a delicious combination of chicken, coconut milk, galangal, lemongrass, and herbs. I find the soup to be a hearty dish. I love that you get the sweet, spicy, and sour with every spoonful. However, I wished that there was more balance between the sweet, spicy, and sour. I find the dish to be too sweet and I wished that it was spicier.

The mains started to arrive a few minutes later.

The Beef Steak Tagalog was quite good. It was savory and sour, which I loved about the dish. The beef was also quite tender.

I enjoyed the Green Curry Chicken, which is made of Dusit’s Curry Paste, coconut milk, bamboo shoot, kaffir lime leaf, and red chili. This is another dish that I enjoyed during our lunch at the cafe. However, just like Tom Kha Gai, the dish was quite sweet. I wished that it was spicier too.

The Pad Thai, a Thai rice noodle dish with shrimp, lime, beansprout, and peanuts, was good. It was nutty. Just like the two other Thai dishes I tried here, this was quite sweet and lacked the spiciness you are looking for in Thai dishes.

For our dessert, we had the Lubi Halo Halo. Served in a coconut, Madayaw Cafe’s halo-halo consists of coconut milk, macapuno, leche flan, tapioca, ube, pinipig. What makes this halo-halo special is they also used shaved iced coconut water. The halo-halo was refreshing and an enjoyable dish.

Madayaw Cafe offers Dusit Thani guests a variety of dishes that will suit their tastes and cravings. While I enjoyed their food during our lunch there, I hope they can improve more on their Thai dishes. It seems to me that they have tailored it to fit the taste buds of the Filipinos but I wish they could just stick to traditional Thai flavors. Probably, spice up the Thai savory dishes and reduce the sweetness.
