Cops keeping eye on NPA in hinterlands

CAGAYAN de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) chief Colonel Henry Dampal on Friday, September 27, said they could not confirm yet if the New People’s Army (NPA) has already set up camp in the hinterlands, following the surrender of the three suspected communist rebels, last week.

Dampal said the presence of the armed group in the hinterlands might be a cause for concern, but is not alarming.

“Categorically, dili ta kaingon nga naay kampo kay kini sila highly mobile ni sila, gatabok-tabok ni sila kay gagukod pud ang atong government forces,” Dampal said.

“So far, sa ato wala ta kakita ug kampo but sa kadako pud sa atong bukid di pud ta ka assure nga ato pud ma-limit ilang movement kay dako man pud kaayo, dili pud ma-cover tanan. But definitely kini sila ang ga baras-baras lang sa atong kabukiran,” he added.

The three former NPA fighters from Barangay Tignapoloan were wearing masks when they were presented to the media in a press conference on Friday.

This is the second batch of suspected NPA combatants who yielded from the city’s hinterland barangays.

The three allegedly belong to the NPA’s Guerilla Front 12, the front operating in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental.

“To some extent makahatag ug alarma kay bisan gani sa schools naay recruitment pero wala man kay so far very peaceful man ang Cagayan de Oro,” Dampal said.

The former NPA members surrendered to Police Station 8-Lumbia’s chief Captain Dennis Ebsolo.

Ebsolo said the rebels, ages 22 and 27, surrendered after negotiations and series of talks. He said the rebels have been members of the NPA organization for four years.

More rebels will surrender soon, he said.

The former rebels turned over one garand rifle, two magazines and 15 rounds of live ammo, one carbine rifle with 2 magazines and 20 rounds of live ammos, 2 rifle grenade, 1 caliber .45 with 10 rounds of live ammos and 1 hand grenade.

Dampal, meanwhile, urged other NPA members to go back to the folds of the law and avail Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-clip).

“Surrender while the government is still giving you a very good offer,” he added.
