Father, son die in Bago City fire

A FATHER and his son were killed in a fire that razed their house last Friday afternoon, September 27, in Barangay Bacong, Bago City.

Authorities identified the fatalities as 24-year-old Rolyn Alapar with his four-year-old son.

Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Bago City Arson Investigator, Fire Officer 3 Rudy Geroche, said based on their investigation, Alapar committed suicide by allegedly starting the fire and trapped himself inside his burning house.

Geroche said they still do not know as to why Alapar set the house on fire. But based on a separate investigation carried out by Bago City police, Alapar had possible marital problems with his wife that could explain why he committed suicide.

The wife is reportedly an overseas Filipino worker (OFW).

Bago City deputy police chief, Police Lieutenant Leonyl Adolacion, said they have reviewed previous records and found that Alapar's wife filed a complaint last year claiming she was being physically abused by her husband.

Adolacion said prior to the wife leaving for work in Saudia Arabia, a heated argument took place between Alapar and his wife.

Alapar, according to the police, left a video to his neighbor before he committed suicide. He reportedly left his son outside the house, but when he saw his father inside the burning house he ran towards him.

Meanwhile, Bago City Mayor Nicholas Yulo has directed the local social welfare office to process the surviving family's financial assistance.
