THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers will try to end the first round with a bang as they take on the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers in the 2019 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum on Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

The Green Lancers are coming off a statement win after they put down the preseason champions, Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras, 71-66, to hike their record to 4-1, good for the best in the league.

In their last game, UV put up a remarkable defensive stand that appeared to put a monkey wrench in the normally fluid SWU-Phinma offense, resulting in Lamine Thiam — undoubtedly the Cobras’ finest weapon — ending up with subpar numbers of just 13 points on 3-of-14 shooting.

UV’s defense would once again be tested on Tuesday as USPF would be led by high-scoring American wingman Sameen Swint, who led the Panthers to a 78-69 overtime win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars last time out. Swint had two huge triples in the extra session, part of a 27-point performance that lifted USPF to 3-2 and into a tie for third place in the standings.

Meanwhile, in the high school tournament, the Don Bosco Greywolves put their two-game winning streak on the line when they battle the USPF Baby Panthers. Don Bosco has been dominant of late, winning their last two matches in overwhelming fashion. (SunStar Cebu)
