Leisure for less

WHEN we’re not hitting the books or beating deadlines at work, a little R&R, whether that involves a gustatory adventure or a trip to a museum, is certainly well-deserved! However, these days, time and money are luxuries that we can’t always afford; which means easily accessible and affordable ways to unwind during our free times are not only ideal but crucial with today’s lifestyle. In celebration of a fun little holiday called “Frugal Fun Day,” here are four ways you can treat yourself to a little downtime without having to travel far or burn a hole through your pockets:

Go on a food trip at Sugbo Mercado

Cebu’s favorite weekend food market is every foodie’s paradise. With the diverse line-up of tenants and its affordable yet delicious offerings, Sugbo Mercado is a good place to satisfy all your cravings. Plus, there are new tenants every now and then (Ugly Dumpling and OG Burgers & Ribs are current hits), which means there’s always something new to try. A plus one is recommended so you can split the costs and try more food. Sugbo Mercado is located in the Garden Bloc at Cebu IT Park and is open from Thursday to Sunday, 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Up your Insta-game at the Colour Museum.

Bring color to your feed with snaps taken at SM Seaside City Cebu’s newest attraction: Colour Museum. Here, you can level up your #OOTD in the psychedelic-themed sections. A tip to the wise: Wear an outfit in a neutral hue like white so you’ll stand out against the quirky backdrops without clashing with these. Colour Museum is located on the second floor, Cube Wing of SM Seaside City Cebu.

Indulge in art at Qube Gallery

This contemporary art space has become a platform of many talented local creatives to showcase their work and share it with a specific audience. To keep things interesting, visit the gallery spontaneously just so you don’t know what kind of art to expect. Admission is absolutely free, however, it is recommended to call ahead and set up an appointment. Qube Gallery is located in Crossroads Mall, Banilad, Cebu City. Check www.qubegallery.ph to see current and past exhibitions.

Go thrift shopping along Osmena Boulevard

In this short stretch in Cebu City alone, one can find a good number of thrift shops or “ukay-ukay” stores.

Take time to really go through each rack, and if you buy two or more items, you can even try to ask for a discount (nicely, of course). You can find items as cheap as P20 to as “expensive” as P250. It’s really about patience, coupled with determination but also sheer luck. The more popular stops are the ones across Fuente Osmeña Circle and in Coco Mall.
