GUAGUA town Mayor Dante Torres led the destruction of hundreds of assorted open-pipe motorcycle mufflers and other illegal motorcycle attachments in front of the Guagua town hall Monday, September 30.

Torres, along with the local police and department heads, used a hammer to destroy the illegal attachments as he reiterated the warning against illegal modifications of motorcycle parts.

Those destroyed were part of the items confiscated by the Philippine National Police from erring motorcycle owners in the town.

The mayor stressed that the use of an improvised mufflers is also a violation of the Republic Act (RA) No. 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code of the Philippines.

Under the national policy, a violator could be fined P15,000 for using a modified muffler.

“Illegal modifications of motorcycle parts may endanger lives,” Torres said.

The mayor lauded the local police for its campaign against illegal mufflers, which the mayor described as a nuisance to residents, considering the loud noise from these illegal motorcycle accessories.

The mayor said that confiscated mufflers should be immediately destroyed so the motor owners cannot use them again.

Based on Land Transportation Office regulations, the sound of a motorcycle’s muffler must not exceed 115 decibels. Owners who illegally modify their motorcycles face fines and could have their motorcycles impounded.
