The many faces of Singapore

SINGAPORE has been tagged with so many names: the Lion City, the Asian Tiger, and the Garden City, among others. All of these connote to positive economy.

However, many do not know that Singapore is also home to horror. Entertainment horror, that is.

Universal Studios Singapore's Halloween Horror Nights, believed to be Southeast Asia's most iconic scare event, returns, as it launched its Halloween Horror Nights 9 with the theme "Death Fest" last September 23, 2019.

Officially opening on September 27 to the public, the horror nights feature all-new frights that are mostly gory sights across 16 nights until October 31 with five horror houses and two killer shows.

1. The Curse of Naga. This is a story of the mysterious disappearance of teenagers who were lost while touring the colorful streets of Bangkok as they transported to a lost village that is under the spell of the Naga, a vengeful snake spirit. This horror house employs elaborate landscape design and stunning special effects. When I entered into this horror house, it made me believe that I was transported into another dimension as the team of its creators uses psychedelic lightings. So much like when you are hypnotized. And at the end of the psychedelic tunnel snake-like figures await to scare you. As for me, I am not really scared of snakes or even of a vengeful snake spirit. But some Chinese tourists who went among us, they said it was the most horrifying horror house they have ever been.

2. The Chalet Hauntings. Also a story of disappearance of five teenagers, Chalet Hauntings is inspired by the stories of Langsuir (vampire) sightings, Hantu Raya, a ghost or demon, and Toyol, an undead infant used by magic practitioners. Inside this horror house, you'll see layers of police tape as you are approaching the scene of the chalet where the five teenagers disappeared. Here, the Langsuir, Hantu Raya, Toyol, and so much more come alive to scare you. This was one of the horror houses that made me scream.

3. Twisted Clown University. Those who have phobias of clowns and confined spaces should not come inside, I tell you. This horror house is one of the most memorable for me because in here, you will really see clowns torturing and beheading other clowns as though this is funny. Never expect friendly clowns in here as torture is their way to make you laugh. Aside from that, there is also one place there which is a hell for the claustrophobic (phobia of confined spaces). I am not claustrophobic, but when I entered into that particular room I really wanted to shout because it left me gasping for air to breath.

4. Spirit Dolls. This is a story of an entire village being slaughtered by an evil doll one night. This legend follows that of a couple who has a little girl whom they loved so much. When the girl died, the couple made a hand-stitched doll and trapped their little girl's spirit in it. Little did they know that their little girl has become a vengeful spirit who traps anyone in the entire village in the life-sized, hand-stitched dolls. Upon entering this house, you will see a silhouette of a doll murdering a person with a knife. A lot of scary dolls straight from your nightmare come alive which makes it a no-no house for those who have phobia of dolls.

5. Hell Block 9. Want to see hell on earth? This horror house is a place for you. Dark, dirty and damp. This prison doesn't rehabilitate, it ravages. Every night, prisoners scream in agony and fear as merciless wardens torture them and leave them for dead, guilty, or otherwise. Here you will see several torture mechanisms being used by the wardens that some of the prisoners are holding their innards just to keep them alive. If you love seeing torture, then this one is for you.

Two other attractions at the Universal Studios Singapore's HHN9 at Resorts World Sentosa that surely will make your Halloween month even more memorable are the Death Fest Live show and the Dead End.

Dead End is the realm of the undertaker and alternate dimension that lies between the land of the living and the domain of the dead. Here you will see death himself and other ghoulish creatures which are there to haunt your sleep.

The Death Fest Live was really superb. Here you can see spine-chilling torture that you will question your own sanity: are they really happening in Heavy Metal shows?
