Cordillera police chief says no to hazing

POLICE Regional Office-Cordillera Director Israel Ephraim Dickson called for a stop to hazing at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

"There are other forms of punishment that maybe given to those who violate the rules inside the PMA not only to plebes. Actually, the upper class men when given a punishment is really punishment but not maltreatment," Dickson said.

Among the authorized punishments being given to cadets who have violated their duties are exercises, confinement to barracks, none acquisition of their privilege to visit their family of their girlfriend, and even a cadet not being allowed to entertain visitors even if the visitors came from far away, said Dickson, a PMA alumnus.

"We should not resort to barbaric acts which is why I also favor the pronouncements of the PMA military leadership as well as the pronouncement of our chief PNP (Oscar Albayalde)," Dickson added.

On Saturday, September 28, newly installed PMA Commandant of Cadets Brigadier General Romeo Brawner Jr., a member of the PMA Class of 1988, revealed plans to rid hazing from the academy following the death of Cadet 4th Class Darwin Dormitorio.

During the 118th Police Service Awards at Camp Bado Dangwa, Philippine National Police Chief General Oscar Albayalde, who was guest of honor and speaker, pointed out the need to discard hazing not only at the PMA but even in the Philippine National Police Academy, saying this is a thing of the past.
