Aguirrre chessfest to honor late Bacolod chesser

THE 2nd Antonio Ivan S. Aguirre 2010 Negros Open Individual Chess Championship will be staged in honor of the late Bacolod chesser Hernan Antonio who passed away last February 9 due to a kidney ailment at the age of 75.

Antonio tied for first place but eventually settled for fourth runner-up honors due to a lower Bucholz tiebreak score during the 1st Antonio Ivan S. Aguirre chessfest, which was staged last April 19 to 25, 2009 and won by US Master Rodrigo Atotubo.

He was a contemporary of the late Negrense GM Rosendo Balinas and was champion of the 1st Far East Bank Region VI Individual Chess Tournament held last November 11 to 20, 1989, a nine-round Swiss system event held at the Barangay Hall of the Provincial Administration Building, Bacolod City.

It was a project of Far East Bank & Trust Company and sanctioned by the Philippine Chess Federation (PCF).

The Aguirre chessfest 2010 edition is organized and officiated by the Game Royale Afficionados of Negros Inc., in partnership with Top’s Millennium Plaza Bowling Lanes. It is sponsored by US-based chess patron Antonio Ivan S. Aguirre, CPA, CFE, CSI, MBA.

The seven-round Swiss System (1 hour 20 moves + 1 hour to finish the game) event is slated to kick off on April 4, Sunday, at 2 p.m., at the Lobby of Top’s Millennium Plaza Bowling Lanes, 10th/Hilado Sts. Capitol Shopping Center, Bacolod City.

Deadline of registration is on April 2, Friday, 6 p.m., with no extension and registration fee is P200 per participant.
