Catap: The illogical which is the heart

HOW should we love? Is it through our mind? Is it through our heart? Or is it both that we must use when we say we love someone? I think in most cases, it is certain that one exercises the art of loving by using his or her heart, and not using the logical senses in trying to reason out, or probably I should say that that commonly, one who loves does not have to reason out at all.

Some call it stupid love, others take it on a highly sophisticated point of view and argue that love is sacrifice, most especially when it is not reciprocated by the person whom we are devoted to. If I may follow the lyrics of a popular Filipino song which goes:

Kahit na ikaw ay nagbago na

Iibigin pa rin kita

Kahit ayaw mo na

Tatakbo, tatalon

Isisigaw ang pangalan mo

Iisipin na lang panaginip ang lahat ng ito

O, bakit ba kailangan pang umalis?

Pakiusap lang na wag ka nang lumihis

Tayo'y mag usap, teka lang, ika'y huminto

'Wag mo kong iwan, aayusin natin 'to

How many of us have gone beyond our sanity in pursuit of the love we highly yearn for? How many of us have gone crazy and forget about the world out of thinking of just one person? How many of us have taken for granted most, if not all of the other people who love us just to make that one special person happy? And, how many of us have been hurt by the very same person we offered our whole lives to? I can surmise that all of us have gone through this madness at least once in our lives.

And even after that one instance, why don't we get tired of loving by heart? Why can't we just take a chance at love once again, this time using our intellect, the saying that goes, we should have been wiser. But no, we don't succumb to the reasons of the mind. Rather we succumb to the desires of our hearts, for we know that when we follow what our heart says, it will truly make us happy and content.

The mind only sees, but the heart truly can both see and feel what is truly essential in our lives. We may have loved and lost the battle, but doing it with our whole heart is something that is indeed exceptional and worth all the aches, sacrifices, and senselessness that we go through. As Charles Dickens have put it: "A loving heart is the truest wisdom."
