Magbanua, Yngayo top Unit 5 chessfest

TOP seeds Wesley Jovan Magbanua and Irish Yngayo lived up to their billing by clinching the gold medals in the just-concluded Unit 5/Davao City Prisaa Meet chess competition held at Emar Human and Environmental College (Ehec) in Matina, Davao City.

Magbanua of Jose Maria College topped the secondary boys division with perfect six points, outclassing Echoel Russ Dangi, Jay-R Aguinaldo, Alfred Abay-Abay, Gilbert Torres, Lean Amier Mantiquilla and James Rhie Leigh Sullano.

JMC's Rodel Buenafe placed second with 5.5 points followed by Torres (4.5) of Emar who placed third.

Magbanua and Buenafe tallied a total of 11.5 points to lift JMC's golden finish in the team event while Emar's Torres and Leonard Niel Jubane (7.0) came second for silver and University of Mindanao (UM) Main's Von Oliver Alzate and Sullano (6.0) settled for the bronze.

UM's Yngayo, for her part, also swept all her five matches to rule the secondary girls class over four-pointers Roselle Vienne Guevara and Charlene Moulic of JMC.

Yngayo eked out wins over Judy Ann Agudo, Dorothy Remolar, Moulic, Guevara and Janna Jane Rose Bautista.

However, UM captured the team gold with eight points over UM's Yngayo and Ramshelle Guianne Vilchez (6.0) and Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (6.0).

In elementary division, UM Main's Ram Isaac Gian Vilchez and Caerel Shane Mantilla annexed golds.
