Vice-guv to conduct loyalty check on members

NEGROS Occidental Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer said Tuesday, October 1, that as president of the United Negros Alliance (Unega), he will initiate a loyalty check among its members and it will start with the mayors.

This came on the heels that the party members lost the presidency of the League of Municipalities (LMP) and the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) to candidates of rival Love Negros.

During the recent PCL elections, Valladolid Mayor Enrique Miravalles of Love Negros won as president by a slim 10-9 margin over San Enrique Mayor Jilson Tubillara of UnegA.

Ferrer said that of the 19 municipal mayors in the province, 10 are Unega members.

"As a party member, you have an obligation to follow party decisions. You owe it to the party you joined," the vice governor said.

A politician can run as an independent but a party provides lawyers and a copy of the election results, Ferrer said.

He added that at the Provincial Board, there are "no political lines."

However, despite losing the LMP and PCL races, Ferrer said Unega is still "a strong political force in Negros."

Pressed to specify the mayor who may have "jumped parties", Ferrer said "it's from southern Negros."
