Sungduan: Happiness and honor

IN THE very busy City of Los Angeles, California known for its ethnic diversity, popular commercial centers, and entertainment industry we can find a Cordilleran couple who continuously promote their rich cultural heritage in the area.

Benguet 13 Organization of California Inc. President Rocky Ocab and wife Jesusa Calisin-Ocab, the owner of Mount Carmel Day Care has been actively involved in activities such as teaching the youth about the importance of their own culture and tradition particularly that of Benguet, the province where they trace their roots.

“I would like to teach the younger generations who were born and grew up here and don’t know the culture back home. We have to teach them our custom and tradition so they will know,” he stressed.

Through fellowship organized by their group they are also able to reunite all their kailians in California and make them feel at home even away from their home country.

Serving Benguet 13 brings them happiness and honor.

They try to give their all in any project that their organization aims to achieve. For them, their march is not for themselves but a march of leadership for the organization, officers and members, with the hope that the next generation of leaders may emulate following their organization’s motto, “Agkakadua! Agtitinnulong! Agiinnayat!”

Rocky was born in La Trinidad, Benguet and migrated in the United States in 1975. He was 12 years old then. Susan on the other hand was born in Asingan, Pangasinan but grew up in Itogon Benguet and Baguio City where she finished her college degree.

They met in 1982 and rooted from a long-distance love affair. They got married in 1991 and blessed with one and only child Angeline who is now married to Ernnie Lozano.

Rocky and Susan are also entrepreneurs managing and operating their own daycare business which is now a household name in the area as many clients appreciate their services.

In fact, they were recognized by the Los Angeles Commission for children and youth for their professionalism and dedication for children and their families.

The couple is also dedicated in giving help to the needy community back home especially in the Cordillera Region like donating money for the Paracelis Technical Vocational High School in Paracelis, Mountain Province. One building of the said school was razed by fire just recently.

May these good deeds be emulated by others.
