AROUND 10,000 volunteers are expected to take part in a massive tree planting activity initiated by the Cebu City Government in the different identified sites of the city on Saturday, October 5, 2019.

The volunteers of the activity are assigned at urban, riverside and upland areas of Cebu City namely the South Road Properties (SRP), Barangay Sapangdaku and Barangay Taptap.

A variety of trees will be planted in the areas such as ornamental trees like Palawan cherries and fire trees in SRP, bamboo trees along the riverside in Sapangdaku and indigenous trees like Narra in Taptap.

The activity, “Kakahuyan alang sa Kaugmaon (Trees for Tomorrow),” aims to plant 3 million trees in the city in the next three years.

The tree planting activity will start at 6 a.m.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring a shovel, gloves, and their own water container. The City discourages the use of single-use plastics during the activity.

Those who do not have their own vehicle may proceed to Cebu City Hall at 5:30 a.m., as the City has prepared seven Kaohsiung buses to ferry them to their respective stations, said Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office head John Jigo Dacua.

Volunteers may also wait at JY Square Mall in Barangay Lahug for those who will be going to Barangay Taptap, while those who are stationed at Barangay Sapangdaku may wait at Guadalupe Church.

Those who will be planting at SRP may proceed directly to the welcome hill.

The massive tree planting activity is one of the missions of Mayor Edgardo Labella, envisioning a “green Cebu City” before his term ends in 2022.

Labella said it is the beginning of a series of activities meant to save the environment. (SunStar Cebu)
