TO ESTABLISH connections to various industries in Russia, the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) sent 13 of its members to explore potential business opportunities.

The group led by Honorary Consul to Russia Armi Garcia is part of President Rodrigo Duterte’s business delegation in Moscow.

“The MCCI delegation has varied business interests such as in printing, food, architecture, real estate, trading and in the medical field,” said MCCI president Stanley Go.

Go said they are targeting to touch base with Russian companies in the capital cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, which are Russia’s main economic hubs.

“Russia has a lot of natural resources like gas and oil. They also also have agricultural products as well, like vegetables, chicken and potatoes,” he said. The delegates arrived Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019.

Russian Ambassador Igor Anatolyvich Khovaev, said in an earlier interview, that Russia’ and the Philippines’ business industries should be partners in growth.

“I had very good discussions here in Cebu about the prospects for our bilateral trade where we identified some priority industries like the energy sector, transportation, telecommunications and pharmaceutical industry,” he said.

Stronger economic, defense cooperation

Duterte and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Oct. 3, agreed to work towards stronger economic and defense cooperation between Manila and Moscow in an effort to fight terrorism.

The two leaders made the commitment following their bilateral meeting held Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Polyana Hotel in Sochi, Russia.

Duterte said he was looking forward to the Philippines’ “robust and comprehensive” partnership with Russia, as he noted that his May 2017 visit to Moscow led to substantial growth in the bilateral cooperation between the two nations on various fields.

“In the past two years, we have seen a dramatic increase in bilateral activities across many areas of cooperation at various levels of government. We have also made historic firsts in the key strategic areas from economic, defense, security and military technical cooperation,” the President said in an opening statement.

“It is imperative to sustain these consultative dialogues and enhance our mechanism to further strengthen the foundation of our growing relationships,” he added.

In terms of economic cooperation, Putin said bilateral trade between Russia and the Philippines has improved.

“We have reached lots of success in our trade and economic cooperation. Last year, our trading has grown two-fold. So it was more than US$1.2 billion. And Russian exports also grew four-fold,” the Russian president said.

“We have major reserves in place and Russian companies are ready to increase the supplies of energy carriers, aircraft, transport, special equipment,” he added. (JOB/SunStar Philippines)
