AFTER receiving reports of New People's Army (NPA) presence while conducting combat operations, troops of the 94th Infantry Battalion encountered more or less 20 NPA rebels at Sitio Cabangahan, Barangay Bantolinao, Manjuyod, Negros Oriental at around 2:45 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2019.

The soldiers fought with the NPA rebels in a 40-minute running gun battle, after which the enemy withdrew towards the northwest direction of the said barangay, the army report said.

No soldiers were hurt in the encounter but the NPA rebels suffered undetermined number of casualties based from the heavy bloodstains found in the NPA position and route of withdrawal.

The troops recovered the war materials and other items; an anti-personnel mine (IED); parts (a bolt, a buffer spring and a charging handle) of an M16 rifle destroyed during the encounter; 1 commercial handheld radio; 1 AM radio; 2 cellular phones; electrical wire; 7 kilos of rice; 2 bagpacks; 3 ponchos; 5 hammocks; 10 “Ang Bayan" booklets; 2 T-shirts with PKP print and a pair of slippers.

The troops are still clearing the area and conducting pursuit operations.

“I urge the soldiers to relentlessly pursue the NPAs who had been menacing our people in the countryside. I also encourage the people to continue to report the presence of NPAs in their communities in order for us to prevent their extortion and other terroristic activities”, Brigadier General Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade Commander said.

This is the 2nd encounter in Barangay Bantolinao, Manjuyod, Negros Oriental since last June (under 302nd Brigade) where 5 anti-personnel mines (IEDs) were recovered, and the 14th armed clash of soldiers under 303rd Brigade against the terrorist NPAs for this year.
