USPF outlasts UV in 4 sets

THE University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers showed they’re one of the teams to watch out for this season as they stayed perfect after the first two games in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s volleyball tournament.

Panthers’ recent victim was last year’s runner-up, the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, in a thrilling game that saw both teams go at it from the get-go at the USPF’s gym in Lahug, Cebu City on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2019. The Panthers took advantage of their home court edge and defeated the Green Lancers after four sets, 33-31, 25-22, 16-25, 25-20, to push their win-loss record to 2-0.

The opening set went the distance as no team wanted to give in, but the Panthers had enough stamina in the tank to finish off the Green Lancers in the first set. USPF then rode the momentum and took the second set also with a narrow margin.

With their back against the wall, the Green Lancers responded and won the third set with a nine-point lead. The Panthers did not let it happen again and secured the fourth set to close out the game with a 3-1 score.

Defending men’s champions Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras, on the other hand, showed off their deadly form in a straight-sets slamming over the Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) Stallions, 25-11, 25-10, 25-19. Also in the men’s division, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) played at a high level as it stunned the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in straight sets, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19.

The University of Cebu (UC-Main) Webmasters, meanwhile, defeated the CDU Stallions, 25-15, 25-05, 25-16, in the women’s division.

It was a fine day for UC-Main as the school also tallied victories in the secondary division.

UC-Main boys’ team registered two convincing wins on Saturday to pad its winning record to 4-0. UC-Main defeated CIT-U, 25-11, 25-11, before pulling off an upset over USC, 25-20, 17-25, 25-23.

USPF boys’ team also duplicated the success of the senior players as they sneaked past the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14. (RSC)
