THE Cebu City Council has approved resolutions for next year’s Sinulog Festival, including establishing “no parking zones” along the Basilica del Sto. Niño during the duration of next year’s fiesta.
In resolutions approved by the council, City Councilor Dave Tumulak said that “No Parking Zones” will be established 100 meters away from the perimeter fence of the basilica for the safety and security of the devotees who will be attending the mass. The riding public should also take note of the temporary road closures, he said.
Tumulak explained that several activities will be held in the vicinity of the church and crowds are expected to flock to the area, especially during the nine-day novena.
The roads that will be closed for the 11-day celebration are from Lapu-Lapu St. up to the corner of F. Gonzales St. of Osmeña Blvd., Legaspi St. up to the corner of Magallanes St. of D.Jakosalem St., Legaspi St. up to M.C. Briones St. of P. Burgos St., M.C. Briones St. up to the corner of Osmeña Blvd., Zamora St., the whole stretch of Legaspi St., and M.J. Cuenco Ave. up to the corner of P. Burgos St. of Magallanes St.
Considering the huge number of attendees who will join the procession and other religious events during Sinulog, traffic management should be of utmost importance, said Tumulak.
He also encouraged business establishments located near the parade route to have their comfort rooms open for the public.
The establishments have the discretion to impose a minimal fee of P5 to P10 to the public for its maintenance and sanitation purposes.
Tumulak noticed that last year, the portable toilets provided by the City, which were placed in designated routes, were not enough to cater to the public.
Aside from that, Tumulak also requested event organizers to submit their proposal, together with their safety and security plan, for the whole duration of the Sinulog. (JJL)
