THE first Oplan Kalusugan (OK), a program of the Department of Education (DepEd), was launched in Calbasaan Elementary School in Minglanilla, Cebu on July 11, 2019.

Over 200 students in the mountain village participated in the event that was witnessed by Minglanilla 2 District Supervisor Danilo Manguilimotan, DepEd Cebu Province Division nurse Minerva Perales, representatives from the Minglanilla Rural Health Unit and administrators from other schools.

Dr. Sheis Gador, DepEd Cebu Province Division dentist, had visited the school and checked the students’ teeth before the OK launch.

During the event, school-based feeding was conducted for learners identified as “severely wasted” during the body mass index classification. Also conducted were water, sanitation and health activities that included proper washing of hands and brushing of teeth; education about drugs; a reproductive health symposium; and medical, dental and nursing services.

Grade 6 pupil Kristine Nicole Briones thanked the DepEd for launching its OK program in her school.

“We were able to take advantage of the services that were all important in our growing up and in our studies,” she said in a mix of Cebuano and English. / TEACHER 1 RHEA FLORES-CARRILLO (S)
