CH to buy 1K large bins to keep streets clean

THE public can expect Cebu City’s streets to be cleaner once the Department of Public Services (DPS) puts up large garbage bins in strategic areas in the city.

The City Government will buy 1,000 pieces of 660-liter garbage bins that will be placed in residential areas.

DPS Chief Joel Biton said among the areas identified are V. Rama St., Banawa Road in Barangay Guadalupe, Gorordo Ave. in Barangay Lahug and the interior parts of the barangays.

The DPS proposed to include P8 million in the 2020 budget for the purchase of the garbage bins.

Their target is to buy all 1,000 bins in the first quarter of 2020.

Biton noticed that after the scheduled pick-up of garbage, there is still trash scattered on the sidewalks of some thoroughfares.

“There are people who still throw their garbage even after the scheduled pick-up. So if they will be late, they can put it in the garbage bin,” he said.

The schedule for garbage collection is from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 12 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Biton said there are existing garbage bins in the different parts of the city, but these are the smaller bins.

To make sure the garbage bins will not be stolen, Biton said the Barangay Environmental Officers (BEO) will take charge of and monitor them round the clock.

They will not only see to it that the garbage bins are not stolen, the BEOs will also make sure the garbage thrown in the bins is segregated.

All 80 barangays in Cebu City already have BEOs after those whose services were terminated were replaced. (JJL)
