Santiago: Third Regional Student Research Congress

THE Benguet State University (BSU) celebrates with its researchers and students who emerged as winners during the ninth joint CorCAARRD-CIERDEC Regional Symposium and the third Regional Student Research Congress held last October 3, 2019 at the Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology, Lagangilang, Campus.

The regional symposium is a yearly activity by the Cordillera Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research and Development (CorCAARRD) and Cordillera Industry and Energy Research and Development Consortium (CIERDEC) in which BSU is one of the member agencies.

Two BSU researches were awarded under the development category: First best paper is "Science and Technology Community-Based Farm (STCBF) on Spray-Type Chrysanthemum Production: A Model in Accelerating Agricultural Development in Benguet" by Carlito Laurean, Teresita Mangili, Jocelyn Perez, Felicitas Ticbaen, Nida Organo, Andy Colte, Charlie Consolacion, Jaime Codio, and Jeramil Simon; and second best paper is "Assessment field, Validation and Documentation of Evidence-Based Ecosystem Adaptation Measures with Potential for Scaling-up in Indigenous Cultural Communities" by Ruth Batani, Romeo Gomez, Cheryll Launio, and Betty Listino.

Under the Research Category, the following BSU researches emerged as first best paper and second best paper, respectively: "Heirloom Rice Landraces of Benguet: Germplasm Conservation and Evaluation and Increasing Productivity through Production Practices" by Belinda Tad-awan, Hector Gayomba, Teresita Masangcay, Jasmin Chomawat, Wilner Mauting, Virginia Tapat and Magdalena Wanawan; and "Impact of the different Postharvest Processing Methods on the Occurrence of Ochratoxin A and Cupping Quality of Arabica Coffee" by Andres Basalong, Von Amado, Margelyn Pasigon, and Hazen Lyn Talbino.

Under the Social-AANR Category, the following BSU researches bagged the first best paper and the second best paper, respectively: "BSU-CVM DA-BAI: Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Project in CAR" by Marietta Amatorio, Criselda Battad, Edlyn Mae Ciano, Joy Guisoben, and Nanette Marpa; and "The Practice of Pasuplay: A Partnership Venture between the Capitalists and Vegetable Farmers-Suplay of Bauko, Mountain Province and Mankayan, Benguet Province" by Leonardo Samonte.

The BSU research on "Development of Local Alternative Flavors for Ice Cream: Leveraging the Processing of Local Fruits through Freeze-Drying" by Dr. Jao-jao Somyden, Dr. Pelin Belino, Ms. Rhea Contada, Ms. Johnabel Basatan, and Ms. Ruda Fe Suanding emerged as first best paper under the industry, energy, and emerging technology category.

In the student technical category, the winning BSU student researches are as follows: "Design, Fabrication and Performance Evaluation of a Motorized Oyster Crushing Machine" by Krisler Wansi and Eunice Mejos as first best paper; "Design, Fabrication and Performance Evaluation of a Batch-Type Fluidized Bed Coffee Roaster" by Vanessa Rose Meana and Nazer Sarapeo Kimkiman as second best paper; and "Aboveground Biomass Mapping of Benguet Pine (Pinus kesiya) Forest in Bokod, Benguet" by Derek Bayer and Christine Parian as third best paper.

In the student social category, the winning BSU student researches are: "Ensuring Intergenerational Tie: Digitizing Pidlisan Folktales to Multimedia- Based Learning System Applying Tragidital Framework" by Mac James Dacillo as First Best Paper; and "The Governance of Local Enterprise of Baguio City and La Trinidad, Benguet" by Joylin Alcid, Mira Faith Ambugawon, Danice Bugarin, and Jaren Lasaten as Second Best Paper.

Meanwhile, nine BSU researches also won in the poster category.
