Vicente: Baguio Sports Code

BAGUIO has long been tagged as a haven of champion athletes, be it amateur or professionals as evidently showcased by athletes who have made it the international stage.

Many athletes hailing from Baguio became members of the Philippine Team and competed in international events like the SEA Games, ASIAN Games, World Championships etc. and even had Olympians.

Baguio City was also represented in the international professional arena as well like in boxing and currently in the mixed martial arts scene courtesy of Team Lakay.

Just recently, a public consultation meeting was called by the Sangguniang Panglungsod of Baguio through the office of Honorable Levy Lloyd Orcales, the chairperson of committee on youth welfare and sports development (CYWSD) regarding the passage of an ordinance for sports development and consultation or review on the proposed crafted Sports Code of Baguio City.

According to Orcales, Baguio has been excellently performing even without a sports code. “Imagine what more our Baguio athletes could achieve with a well-crafted sports code,” he said adding the public consultation is for those affected and beneficiaries to air their piece as the experts of their field in order to address all concerns and make the Sports Code significant and comprehensive as possible.

The public consultation is a first of the many more meetings that will be called to iron out a Sports Code that would truly be beneficial for the athletes and who to better craft it with than the coaches and athletes representing their respective field of sports discipline.

CYWSD is hopeful it could achieve what it aims to accomplish for the athletes and the sports as a whole in the City of Baguio and as much as possible cater to all existing and emerging sports in the City of Baguio.

The public consultation also showcased a report of the Baguio City Sports Office on the developments of sports and sports facilities in the city anchored in improving the condition of the athletes and coaches as they prepare for competitions.

The passing of a Baguio Sports Code will be essential for the local sports community to address all the concerns and circumstances to make sure that the path being taken in the Sports Development of Baguio is the right and stable track.
