Team CDO bags 4 golds in Malaysia Int’l chess tourney

CITY Mayor Oscar Moreno recently lauded the outstanding performance of Cagayan de Oro City’s Chess Team after taking home four golds, one silver and two bronze medals in a twin overseas competitions held recently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Double gold medalist Ruelle “Tawing” Canino bannered the city’s campaign as she bagged her first gold medal at the 9th DATCC Age Group Chess Championship 10-under girls category, while capturing another gold medal in the Astro Merdeka Day individual rapid chess event.

Tawing’s elder brother, Ronald Canino, likewise displayed his prowess as he took home Team CdeO’s third gold medal in the Astro Merdeka Day rapid open team event, aside from clinching two bronze medals in the boys 16-under individual standard and individual rapid event.

Team CdeO’s fourth gold medal is courtesy from Mary Joy Tan who ruled the 16-under girls individual standard event in the 9th DATCC Age Group Chess Championship category. She also got a silver medal in the individual rapid event.

According to Team CdeO Chess coach Johnnel Balquin, Tawing Canino’s double-gold medal haul earned her the right to represent Team Philippines in the FIDE World Cadet Chess Championships to be held at Santiago de Compostela in Spain on November 3-16, 2018. (PR)
