Mandaue officials share City’s best practices in Yokohama conference

MANDAUE City officials led by Mayor Jonas Cortes are in Yokohama, Japan this week to share the City’s best practices in urban sprawling at the 8th Asia Smart City Conference.

The three-day conference, which started on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019, is a global platform where leaders of Asian cities gather to share knowledge and best practices.

Different cities in Asia, including Mandaue and Cebu City, joined the conference to present initiatives in managing traffic, waste, disaster and the environment.

City Administrator Jamaal Calipayan said Mandaue is fortunate to join the conference because it serves as an opportunity for the City to improve and learn from different Asian cities.

Calipayan shared that Mandaue City’s growth created more business and livelihood opportunities, which encouraged many individuals to move to the city.

As a result, the City has seen a growing population of informal settlers, which brought about different problems.

Cortes and other city officials will share how they managed the informal settlers and will present the City’s best practices in urban sprawling, specifically its efforts to spread development to undeveloped parts of the city.

Aside from Cortes, his executive secretary, lawyer Eddu Ibañez, are also attending the conference, as well as Mandaue City Planning and Development Office head Marlo Ocleasa and Mandaue City Environmental and Natural Resources Office head Araceli Barlam.

The Asian Smart City Conference also serves as a venue for different private companies to explore investment opportunities in Asian cities and for academic institutions to offer solutions to the problems of the cities. KFD
