Labella creates water advisory body

AFTER some local government units expressed their dissatisfaction with the service provided by the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD), Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella created the Cebu City Water Advisory Committee.

The Water Advisory Committee, created through an executive order issued Oct. 7, 2019, is to gather baseline data on water resources in Cebu City.

It will also conduct studies in aid of data collection, with support from government agencies and non-government organizations on water resources management.

Roberto Varquez, an investment and systems analyst expert, is named chairman of the committee.

Among the 13 members of the committee are City Administrator Floro Casas Jr., Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) Kenneth Carmelita Enriquez, and City Planning Officer Joel Reston.

Labella said the concerns on water shortage, El Niño phenomenon and saltwater intrusion have been plaguing the city and other parts of the country, and need to be addressed.

Recently, the towns of Consolacion, Cordova and Liloan and the cities of Talisay, Cebu, Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue passed resolutions or otherwise expressed their dissatisfaction with the poor service of MCWD, the government-owned and -controlled corporation that distributes water to eight towns and cities in Metro Cebu.

Also, the Cebu Provincial Board has asked the Office of the Ombudsman to consider filing charges against MCWD officials for the inadequate water supply in the metro.

MCWD has announced that the water supply in its service areas will have it worse in the coming days with the drop in the production of the Jaclupan Facility. JJL
