IN A world that seems to forget its roots due to the dominance of westernized approach and influence to every day’s work, Davao City together with the National Commission on Indigenous People, Davao City Indigenous People’s Youth Federation, and the City Tourism Operation’s Office converged anew indigenous youth for a day of Artists’ Assembly at Magsaysay Park in Davao City on October 8.

The youth artists’ assembly was attended by around 300 indigenous peoples (IPs), 250 of whom are youth from the five Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) of Davao City for the event held at the Kadayawan Village inside Magsaysay Park.

The IP youth presented original song composition in their indigenous dialects, theater arts presentation at the Amphitheater, and poster making contest.

Elders also passed on the knowledge through sharing of Indigenous Knowledge, Systems, and Practices (IKSP) to the youth. Traditional cooking was also displayed during the assembly.

There were also music jamming between the youth and elders during lunch break and interactions between tribes that shows unity among tribes.

Indeed, the tradition will continue with the commitment of the new generation of Indigenous Cultural Community youth of Davao City to fully embrace their culture and carry it on to the next generation.

Thus, being a Lumad is something to be proud of considering the community’s rich history and tradition.
