A BUDGET of P370 million is eyed for the improvement of the children's playground and lake at Burnham Park.

Councilor Mylen Yaranon said the City Council is set to tackle next week the approval of plans made.

"The council will tackle on Monday the approval of the plans, subject to revisions that may arise during public consultation," Yaranon said.

Yaranon leads the Burnham park Technical Working Group tasked to oversee the rehabilitation of park.

In the proposed plans, cultural symbolism were set in the designs with respect to the original settlers of Baguio City with patterns made for flooring attune to traditional weaves, tattoos of the region as well as icons of the city.

The new plans also show improvements to the lake area docking, fountain spaces, and railings with regional design features.

The park's clusters include the Burnham Lake, Children Playground, Skating Rink, Rose Garden, Orchidarium, Igorot Park, Melvin Jones Grandstand, Athletic Bowl, Picnic Grove, Japanese Peace Tower, Pine Trees of the World and Sunshine Park.

The 34-hectare Burnham Park was named after American urban planner Daniel Burnham who produced the city's master plan during the American colonial period when it was declared as a chartered city by the Philippine Commission on September 9, 2009.

In 1904, it was developed into a park, based on the design of Burnham as influenced by the "City Beautiful Movement."

Before Burnham's 1904 design was set in place, the flat, mossy area served as watering hole for cows after feeding on grasses all over Kafagway.

To date, the declaration of Burnham Park as a Significant Historical Site, is pending at the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

The park rehab will start with a P20-million fund from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority.
