THE Ancillary Services Unit (ASU) said they are 56-percent compliant in the demolition of illegal structures in Davao City.

ASU chief Paul Bermejo said they had been removing illegal structures that congest sidewalks as part of their mandate.

Along with the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) and the City Engineer’s Office (CEO), they intensified their campaign against establishments obstructing sidewalks, which are intended for pedestrians, since the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) issued the Memorandum Circular 2019-121, which gave local government units (LGUs) a 60-day ultimatum to clear the roads in their respective areas.

Bermejo said the city government continues its operation despite the lapsed deadline on September 29.

“Daghan na naadtuan atong mga tropa. Primarily, atong focus is diria sa Poblacion area (Our team had already conducted its operation in different areas in the city. Our main focus is centered here in the Poblacion area),” Bermejo said.

Although he said that there are certain vendors, primarily in the Bankerohan area, who pleaded for them to continuously operate.

“Gitugutan naman sab nato sila. Di lang sila manaog sa gutter para dili sila mag-cause of traffic congestion (We allowed them for as long as they won’t step down in the gutter, which would cause traffic congestion),” he said.

CTTMO, on Monday, October 7, reported 19 out of 41 identified roads in the city of obstructions, were already cleared by the city.

These areas are Roxas Boulevard, Quirino Avenue, Quezon Boulevard, Jacinto Extension, Guerrero Street of Brgy 24-C, Dacudao Avenue in Agdao, Kilometer (Km) 7 Bangkal to Balusong in Matina, Bago Aplaya, Bankerohan, Matina, Ulas to Talomo, Kms 5 and 6 of Buhangin, Angliongto Street, Araullo Street of Jacinto Extension, Jacinto Street, and Bangoy Street.

CTTMO head Dionisio Abude said they were only able to achieve 46.34-percent compliance with the DILG mandate due to the wide scope of their operation.

DILG-Davao director Alex Roldan also seconded Abude’s explanation, saying that it is hard to accomplish a total 100-percent accomplishment of the mandate.

However, he said overall majority of the local government units (LGUs) in the region were able to comply with the mandate, based on the submitted compliance assessment and validation report submitted by some LGUs in the region.

LGUs were given until October 11, to submit their reports.
