Baguio lines up events for Indian Day

A MEDICAL mission, bloodletting and gift giving have been lined up for Indian Day celebration in Baguio City.

The activities will be led by Baguio Indian Temple Incorporated president Paul Lalwanim Sant with Nirankari Charitable Foundation president Charlie Chandnani at the PFVR Youth Center on October 19 with cultural presentations from Indian communities all over the country highlighted by a food tasting and yoga demonstrations throughout the day.

A medical team organized by Dr. Willy Occidental will conduct the medical mission.

The celebration of Indian Day is provided by a city ordinance signed by former Mayor Mauricio Domogan, which sets the celebration every October 19.

Former Councilor Ed Avila, in proposing the ordinance, said the City of Baguio has long been the home of Indians who have migrated from their homeland to make the Summer Capital of the Philippines their permanent home.

Among the well-known Indian-owned businesses are Valirams, Bombay Bazaar and Fil-Indian Department Store.

Some establishments have also given back to the community, such as Tulsiram Sharma Bheromulls Department Store on Session Road. The owners are active in Boy Scouts of the Philippines and Baguio City Council.

Citizens of India first came to the Philippines in the mid-18th century. Most were textile merchants and operated through their stores or door-to-door peddling of their merchandise.

They later engaged in garment manufacturing and exporting.

The activity is also coordinated with the Rotary Club of Downtown Session headed by Manoj Tank with the Philippine National Red Cross, Baguio City Chapter and Lafayette Luxury Suites.
