UC opens volleyball semis campaign with rout of USJ-R

THE University of Cebu (UC) picked up a resounding win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 25-23, 14-25, 25-13, in the round-robin semifinals of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) boys’ volleyball tournament on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019, at the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USPF) gym.

UC fought from being down 15-10 to steal the first set from the powerhouse USJ-R. UC knotted the game at 19-all but USJ-R managed to pull within two points before UC tied the game again at 22-all. The former uncorked three crucial attacks spiked by Carl Hinly Canama’s ace service that secured the first set.

USJ-R answered in the second set as the team unleashed its potent force to slam UC, 25-14, and forced a deciding third set.

The game went back-and-forth at the start of the third set before UC dropped a telling 6-0 run to stretch its lead to seven points, 18-11. UC completely pulled away and registered a double-digit edge, 22-12, before finishing off its opponent with a 12-point cushion.

Four teams will play a single-round robin semis with the top two advancing to the finals. The other semifinalists in the boys’ division are the defending champion USPF and the University of San Carlos (USC).

In the girls’ division, USPF is on the right track for its title defense as it escaped the gutsy Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, in its first game in the semis.

The USJ-R girls’ team produced a different result as it defeated USC in straight sets, 25-15, 25-16.

It was a double celebration for UC as the men’s team pulled off a closely-contested game over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U), 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 13-25, 15-7, in the elimination round of the college division.

UC rose from one set down and took the game in the deciding fifth set.

Also in the men’s division, USC recovered from a first set letdown to defeat the home team USP-F, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22. (RSC)
