PERSONNEL of the Sagay City Veterinary Office and members of the Provincial Task Force on African Swine Fever (ASF) have disposed 15 kilograms of "hot meat" seized in a market in Barangay Paraiso, Sagay City, Friday, October 11.

Modesto Joseph Cañonero III, Veterinary I of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), said the pork products from different establishments were confiscated for having no meat inspection certificates.

Cañonero, who is part of the task force, said hot meat are those that are displayed and sold without passing through an authorized slaughterhouse or licensed inspector.

"Because these are hot meat products, we cannot determine the source of these products," he said, adding that "we cannot make sure if these are free from diseases."

The confiscation has nothing to do with the existing 90-day ban on pork products from Luzon amid the ASF scare in the country.

Cañonero, however, said they are also intensifying the campaign against hot meat products alongside the efforts to protect the province's swine industry against the fatal animal disease.

Aside from hot meat and meat products coming from ASF-affected sources, the PVO is also stepping up measures against mishandled products.

In fact, 12.7 kilograms of mishandled imported meat products were confiscated at the public market of Cadiz City last week.

These were found non-compliant to the guidelines on proper display of imported meat products.

Cañonero said this is to ensure the safety of the public, stressing that hot meat and mishandled products pose health risk among consumers.

"During our information-education campaign, we encourage the consumers to check if the establishment has inspection certificate to ensure that the meat products they are buying are safe," he added.
