MALACAÑANG on Monday, October 14, lauded Filipino athletes Carlos Yulo and Nesthy Petecio for bringing pride and honor to the Philippines by bagging gold medals in their respective world sports events.

Speaking to Palace reporters, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the Palace was “very proud” of Yulo and Petecio’s achievements.

“Of course, we congratulate the gold medalists,” the Palace official said.

“We're always proud every time a Filipino wins, even a bronze or silver medal. Isa lang ang ibig sabihin noon: talagang magaling tayo, kahit na every now and then (It only means one thing: We excel every now and then),” he added.

Yulo, 19, became the first Filipino World Gymnast champion at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Men’s Floor Exercise held in Stuggart, Germany.

He bested Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat and China’s Xiao Ruoteng, who took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Following Yulo’s feat was Filipino boxer Nesthy Petecio who clinched the gold medal in the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Championships, besting Liudmila Vorontsove in Ulan-Ude, Russia.

Yulo and Petecio are set to receive P1 million incentive each, the Philippine Sports Commission announced Monday.

Panelo said the Palace was elated by the two athletes’ victories.

“Our gold streak continues,” Panelo said. “Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino (Long live, Philippine athletes)!” (NASE/SunStar Philippines)
