Petecio shines in world stage

NESTHY Petecio won a gold medal in the featherweight division of the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship after beating hometown bet Liudmila Vorontsova, becoming just the second Filipina to win it all in the world championships.

The 27-year-old Petecio defeated Vorontsova, 3-2, in the featherweight finals on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019 in Ulan Ude, Russia.

Three judges scored the fight with 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 in favor of Petecio, while the other two judges saw the fight differently with Vorontsova up ahead with scores of 30-27 and 29-28.

Petecio started her world championship campaign with a 3-2 win over 2014 bantamweight gold medal winner Stanimira Petrova of Bulgaria. She then beat China’s Qiao Jieru by also 3-2.

In the quarterfinals, Petecio outclassed Japanese pug Sena Irie, 4-1, before beating English Karriss Artingstall with a 4-1 score line.

Petecio is just the second Filpina to win a gold in the tournament after her teammate Josie Gabuco won a gold medal in China in 2012.

Petencio hopes to continue her success into the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Philippines on Dec. 2 to 7 at the PICC Forum in Pasay City. (EKA)
